Today Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom notified Daniel James Sullivan Jr. of Petersburg that the State of Alaska has opened an investigation into his declaration of candidacy for United States Senate before determining whether he may appear on the August 18 primary ballot.

The investigation follows credible allegations that Sullivan filed for office in coordination with another campaign with the deliberate intent to confuse Alaska voters, capitalizing on the fact that he shares a first and last name with incumbent U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan and recently affiliated with the Republican Party.

“The Division of Elections has a fundamental obligation to protect the integrity of Alaska’s elections and ensure voters are not deceived about the identity of the candidates on their ballot,” said Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom. “Serious allegations have been raised concerning this filing in the race for U.S. Senate, and the people of Alaska deserve a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that the election is carried out properly and without deception.”

The Lt. Governor requested a sworn affidavit from Sullivan responding to specific allegations, including whether he had direct or indirect contact with another candidate for U.S. Senate or an agent of the Democratic Party with respect to his declaration of candidacy.
